While writing so much about AI in medicine, I thought to myself the audience would probably like to hear about the origins or history of the complex technology. Artificial Intelligence did not become an established field of study until the mid 50s. However, the thought process for creating a human-like thinking piece of technology can be traced back to much longer ago. The first AI program was introduced to the world in the world 1955. It was able to prove mathematical theorems. AI would continue making steps throughout history. By 1961, the first AI robot was being used in General Motors to do what was previously a job for humans.
By the 70s Japan had developed a robot that could serve as an artificial arm or leg and somewhat mimic actual human movements and behavior. In the 80s, the first car that could operate with no driver was introduced. It was a Mercedes Benz and was first revealed in 1986. It was also equipped with cameras. By 1995, the first piece of chat AI was introduced.
Fast forward to modern times. We are now able to build machines that can mimic doctors and other medical workers which is a testament to how far we have gone and how fast technology is being innovated.
